IMAGINING SCHOOLS AS THE CENTER OF COMMUNITIES AND THE LOCUS OF ACTION
Kennedy zone
The Kennedy Zone Action Plan + Toolkit were created through a collaboration between Kennedy Elementary staff, students, and families alongside the Houston Trial Lawyers Foundation to ensure that children have safe and beautiful routes to school. Kennedy Elementary School is located northwest of downtown Houston, in the Independence Heights Super Neighborhood. The school attendance boundaries are approximately East Rogers Street to the north, Neyland Street and the Pacific Railroad to the south, Airline Drive/ I-45 to the east, and North Shepherd Drive to the west. The Kennedy Zone Action Plan focuses on three key issues: Housing, Mobility, and Health. Building from the information collected in the Kennedy Zone Data Book, the plan identifies sites, strategies, and best practices for affordable housing, mobility improvements, creating a local food network, as well as strategies to improve health with an emphasis on a safe environment.
